How To Get the Police Report
Matthew Ross with the Iowa State Patrol wrote up the report. The Iowa State Patrol assigned case number 2017022314 to this crash. The full report has much more detail and can include a diagram in the crash report. A copy of the police officer's report of a crash costs $4. You must pay by check or money order. Iowa state law only allows the police to provide reports to people involved in the accident, attorneys, insurance companies or insurance agents. To get a copy of the report you must send a written request with the date of the accident, time, location, and names and driver license numbers of the drivers involved. You must send the payment and the written request in the mail to: Iowa Department of Transportation; Office of Driver Services; P.O. Box 9204; Des Moines, Iowa 50306-9204. But you can call 877-925-1969 right now to request a free copy of the police report.
Insurance Claim
The child's family may have an insurance claim. A lawyer will maximize the amount collected from the insurance companies. In most cases, family members can recover money for the loss of a loved one—even if a family member was driving. Getting a lawyer working on this case early will increase the amount of money the child's family recovers for this wrongful death.
